2015 Williamsport Open

Held on Saturday, November 7, 2015 and Sunday, November 8, 2015 in the College Avenue Labs building on the Penn College campus, the 2015 Williamsport Open was a great success.

Thirty-one competitors competed for prizes and trophies in three separate sections: Open, Under 1800 and Under 1400. Prizes were awarded to each section: 1st – $200, 2nd – $100, 3rd – $50 along with trophies to 1st and 2nd. There were also sub-section awards of $50 each for the best score Under 2000, Under 1600 and Under 1200.

The tournament directors were Solomon Francis, club president and Jim Cunningham, club secretary/treasurer.

Congratulations to all of the players as there were many exciting and very hard fought games.

Tanner McNamara took 1st place in the Open section followed by Sean Simmons and Emily Hu.

Club member Alfredo Blas took 1st place in the U1800 section followed by Gordon Clapp. 3rd place was shared between Kevin Hemingway and Jeff Hoskavich. Micah Donohue of State College took the U1600 award.

Club member David Han, of Lewisburg, took 1st place in the U1400 section with a perfect score of 5-0! No less than four club members tied for 2nd place; Eric Holecko, Pat Murray, Shaun Mutchler and Ray Sciacca. Eric, Shaun and Ray also tied for the U1200 award.

Kevin Hemingway was the lucky winner of the tournament door prize, donated by club member Tony Maurer, a beautiful, hand-crafted wooden chess set and board.
