2015 7/31 Weekly Update

Meetings: We will have our regular open play meeting this Saturday, 8/1, starting at 10:00 a.m. in the coffee shop area of the Books-A-Million store at the Lycoming Mall.

Our tournament planning committee members (Solomon Francis, Pat Murray, Alfredo Blas, Larry Ingram, Tony Maurer and myself) are very pleased to announce the return of the “Williamsport Open”; a traditional two-day, USCF-rated, longer time control(G/90;d5), five round chess tournament with prize money and trophies. We’re connecting with some history as many years ago the original Williamsport Chess Club held a Williamsport Open tournament. For those new to tournament chess an “Open” tournament means the tournament is open to any United States Chess Federation (USCF) chess player, not just our club members. We’ll be advertising this tournament in the USCF online tournament listing database and promoting the tournament to USCF affiliated chess clubs across Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, southern New York, northern Virginia, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland.

The tournament will be held on Saturday, November 7 and Sunday, November 8. The tournament site will feature several wonderful rooms with lots of space and excellent lighting on the Penn College campus. We’re advertising a $1,200 prize fund based on 40 registrations with $1,000 of that guaranteed if we don’t receive 40 entrants. There will be three sections of competition; Open, U1800 (must be rated 1799 or lower) and U1400 (must be rated 1399 or lower). Each of the three sections will offer the following prize awards: 1st $200, 2nd $100, 3rd $50. 1st and 2nd in each section will also receive a tournament trophy. The registration fee for adults (18 and over) is $50. Youth (under 18) registrations are $20. We’re accepting registrations beginning now at www.2015williamsportopen.org. Contact any of the planning committee members for more information.

This is an exciting and major next step in the growth and development of our club. We’re hoping to make this an annual event that attracts chess players of all skill levels from all over northeastern U.S.

Our next USCF-rated, quad-style, three-round, single-day tournament will be held on Saturday, August 15. For details: www.williamsportchessclub.org/tournaments/quadtournament
